What is art reproduction?
Reproduction photography (sometimes called "digitizing") is used to create digital images of artwork while maintaining an accurate representation of the work as much as possible.
It is a highly technical field of photography, requiring expert knowledge and specialized gear.
Images created this way are an accurate representation of the original work, and are used for various purposes: printing of art editions, catalogs, promotion or advertisment, submission for grants and exhibitions etc.
Image taken by phone camera:
The image proportions are distorted, the colors are dull and do not represent the true vibrance and tone of the original, the glass reflects the camera and the room, fine detail is lost and the frame and paspartu appear in deffernt colors than they are.
Professional reproduction done by me:
Proportions are kept, colors are true-to-life, image detail is high, glass reflections are eliminated and the frame appears true to the original.
To reliably and accurately digitize art it is not enough to use "a good camera", as the final appearence of the image depends on many other variables, and requires additional work and adjustment in expert post-processing tools.
Using specialized measurment and calibration tools the photographer guarantees the final image will display true to source color and a uniform lightness even across very large works!
